I Want To Be Jessica Fletcher When I Grow Up

For Halloween, I dressed up as J.B. Fletcher, mystery writer and amateur sleuth, played by the effervescent Angela Lansbury in Murder She Wrote. Well, I wore a trench coat and a wig. I didn’t have time to find one of her matching blazer-and-slacks looks.

Murder She Wrote, which ran from 1984-1996, has been my constant right-before-bed show for about nine months now. I’ve watched and re-watched every single episode of this cozy, funny, campy, and sometimes dark show. It resonates with our current cultural moment, despite its dated production style: the slow pacing, the sometimes stilted dialogue, and the lackadaisical staging of action sequences (everyone in this show holds a gun casually, like it’s a cup of coffee.)
